Both are shown off to great effect in this (unusual for Basie) trio setting. Less is definitely more here, particularly in the sparse but distinctly swinging first bars of the opening track 'sandman'. If you like this album, do also check out Basie's other trio album, 'For the First Time'. Highly recommended.5/5(8).

Count Basie Advanced Piano Artist Arrangements $ A few upper intermediate arrangements, but overall an excellent collection for the more advanced pianist. The arrangements by Basie contained in this collection will not be found elsewhere -- quite playable (especially if you're comfortable with stride) and of course sound wonderful when.

A Count Basie trio set – the second meeting of the Kansas City Three, a combo that features Ray Brown on bass an Louis Bellson on drums! Basie 's really great here – out front, and moving with modes that are quite different than his fuller group sessions – surprisingly sensitive at points, even though still imbued with all of his trademark swing!
