A laptop will not help you make a mixtape. A cassette player with two cassette slots and a record function is what I used as a kid. Or a recorder that you plug into the other cassette player through the headphone jack. Someone may want to correct me as I haven't done this in at least years.

Before CDs were popular, the cassette tape was king in the world of music. Cassettes were small, relatively inexpensive and, best of all, recordable. No one was forced to listen to prerecorded albums; instead they made their own collections of favorite songs. In the s and 80s, it became almost cliche to make a mixed tape of meaningful songs.

The sample used in "Don't Make Me Wait" comes from a short-lived New York group that was the brainchild of Larry Levan of Paradise Garage fame. The US had to wait a little bit longer: It was introduced there in June Finally there was a way to listen to music on the go, in an easy portable way. Carrying a stack of cassettes and spare batteries was a bit more of a hassle though. The only remaining cassette factory in the US, National Audio Company, has been manufacturing analog.

Welcome to /r/cassetteculture, a subreddit dedicated to the humble cassette. Before the rise of the internet, it was tape trading and DIY ethos among bands and their supporters that drove the scene. And today, indie bands are rejuvenating the format by releasing new music on cassettes; there are now hundreds of tape labels.
