As Depeche Mode’s international stature grew to awesome proportions, two compilation albums — The Singles and Catching Up — were released. The former, issued in the UK, is a fine collection of thirteen familiar items; the cassette and CD add two more.

Television Set was a song played by the band at virtually every gig during , usually as their opening number in the first 6 months of that year. Replacing the original Catching Up with Depeche Mode compilation, Singles 81>85 subtracts two tracks -- the lightweight curiosity "Flexible" and "Fly on the Windscreen," which surfaced to better effect on Black Celebration-- and adds two, the full six-minute remix of "Just Can't Get Enough" and the original version of "Photographic," Depeche's recording debut on a compilation album.

The result is Catching Up With Depeche Mode, an outdated but fun compilation. The songs are all pretty great, but that's a given with Depeche Mode. The first three songs, Dreaming of Me, New Life, and Just Can't Get Enough, are vintage Vince Clark synth pop, which can be grating upon first listen, but definitely grow on you upon repeated listens.

Like its predecessor, People Are People, Catching Up With Depeche Mode attempts to fill in gaps in the group's extensive discography by compiling singles and album tracks taken from their four previous studio LPs. Dating back to the band's Vince Clarke-penned hits ("Just Can't Get Enough," "Dreaming of Me"), the set culminates with tracks like "Master and Servant" and "Blasphemous Rumours.
